Mean Girls

We're still in the midst of The Great Transition. It's been a one step forward, two steps back type of thing.

After last week's wonderful 'Week of Grammy,' this was back to reality week. By noon on Tuesday Little Mister had a fever. By noon yesterday, Little A did too. In all fairness, the little guy probably didn't catch it at day care, unless it was some super-bug that only had a 4 hour incubation period (since we were home on Monday). Still, it required some serious schedule shuffling of me, Husband and my mom.

So, I'm sitting at home instead of work, hoping that I can get caught up on work this weekend and next week.

The point of this post, and yes it does have one, was to share what has transpired in Little A's class this week.

Twice she has come home telling me that a few of the girls have said they don't want to be her friends. She asked me why they said that and how does one explain that girls are just mean? Where are those girls learning that? My guess is that they have big sisters who have trained them early.

What do I tell her to say in response? How should I handle this?

Why must girls be mean? I was already dreading adolescense and teen years with a daughter, knowing how many times she'll get her feelings hurt, her heart broken and how I can't protect her from that. I remember it all too well. We all do.

I just didn't think it would start at 3.

Toddler Talk - May 2009

Why does Ariel wear a bra and no shirt?

Why can't I see a live dinosaur? Try explaining extinction to a 3 year old....
Are dinosaurs in heaven because they don't live here anymore?

Why don't people lose their skin like snakes?

Much Better

This week was so much better than last. For one reason: my mother in law!

She rocks. Seriously rocks.

She swooped in on Monday to save the day and left today. I tried to hide her car keys this morning, but to no avail. Maybe I should have tried letting the air out of her tires.

She played with the kids in the morning and took them into daycare around 9:30. She picked up the little guy at 2:30 and the big girl around 5. She cleaned my house, cooked dinner, did the shopping. Spoiled us rotten!

I could totally do the working mom thing if I had a live-in grammy!

Now I'm off to enjoy a 3 day weekend and am enjoying finding little treats around the house that she left for us.

Bruised

So, working KICKED MY TAIL. Hard. Multiple times.

Monday started off okay, Tuesday wasn't bad. By Wednesday morning the Little Mister didn't want us to leave when we dropped him off. Wednesday night he was full on congested and didn't sleep much (and neither did his parents). Thursday Husband stayed home with him until 11 and then took him in. That night was a repeat of the night before. Friday we got a call from school that he had a fever and by that afternoon we had a diagnosis of ear infection AND pink eye.

So, my boy who has never been sick got a double whammy this week.

On a positive note, Little A did fine and asked why she couldn't go to school today. She was a little ramped up each night, likely quite stimulated from 9 hours of constant play time. This was 'musical instrument week' in her class and she got to bring in her keyboard for the show'n'tell yesterday. She loved it.

As for me, working full time in this position at this company will be quite different than my last job. Jury is still out. I think I am the only mom of the group, thus the only one who needs to be out the door by 5 in order to get to day-care on time. That's going to be tough to manage. My last job was quite flexible and very accommodating to working moms.

I'm already worried about the little guy for next week. I'm wishing my retired mother-in-law lived closer!

The Makings of a Mom

It's the pocket full of acorns. The backseat full of cheerios. Realizing I know words to more kids songs than adult songs.

The cheeks that just call for kisses. The little hands that will someday do so much, but for now are content holding mine. The 'maaamaaa' call I hear each morning, often before daylight. The hand prints all over my closet door, from countless trips in to sneak out my high heels.

It's the fact that my purse is weighted down with sippy cups, wipes, applesauce and baby sunscreen. It's not wearing dresses for almost a year because they are not nursing bra compatible. It's kinks in my shoulders from simultaneiously carrying children, groceries and diaper bags.

It is the mental gymnastics required in trying to answer questions honestly but age appropriately. It is reading the same book time after time, night after night.

It's the sleepy grins. The proud smiles. The adorable pout that I have to try my hardest not to smile at. The sight of my children sleeping. The sound of their laughter.

It's the little things that I cherish. That I'm already missing, even though we're in the midst of it.

Help me out?

Does anyone out there have any good freezer-friendly recipes? Bueller? Bueller?

I got a new chest freezer this weekend (you know you are a full blown dork grown-up when the purchase of a freezer makes your whole weekend) and am trying to make things this week that I can freeze for quick dinners during the work week.

Thanks!

Florastor Kids Giveaway - Kid's Probiotic

A little body science lesson....

There are billions of microbiota inside the intestines that keep the digestive system working properly. An upset in the balance of these microbiota, or flora, can cause intestinal problems, including diarrhea and abdominal discomfort, which can range from moderate to severe. Florastor® Kids is a clinically-tested, natural, yeast-based probiotic that aids in the growth of good microbiota in the intestines, while destroying and removing pathogenic (bad or disease-causing) microbiota to help maintain or restore optimal intestinal health.

Unique because it can be safely given to babies and children from the age of two months, Florastor® Kids is a great-tasting powder that can be dissolved in beverages or soft foods.

Here is a snippet from a Q&A with Dr. James Sears regarding Florastor® Kids :

Q: How do the effects of Florastor Kids differ from those of bacteria-based probiotics, such as acidophilus?
A: One of the key differences in a yeast-based probiotic, such as Florastor Kids, is that it can not be killed by antibiotics, and it, in turn, protects the body’s own flora during the course of antibiotic treatment to guard against antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea occurs when antibiotics disturb the natural balance of “good” and “bad” microbiota in the intestinal tract, causing harmful bacteria to grow far beyond their normal numbers. The result is often frequent, watery bowel movements.

Q: Which kids could benefit from Florastor Kids?
A: Florastor Kids has been proven effective in managing a wide variety of intestinal problems, but is often used to help with:
· Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea (AAD)
· Acute gastroenteritis (general, sudden onset diarrhea)
· Traveler’s diarrhea
· Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (C. diff)
· Chronic inflammatory intestinal conditions, such as Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s

Q: Why would a parent choose to treat a bout of diarrhea with Florastor Kids as opposed to an anti-diarrheal product?
A: Anti-diarrheal medications such as loperamide (Imodium) are typically not recommended for young children. Florastor Kids helps remove toxins from the intestines and at the same time bolsters the body’s defense against the pathogens.

Q: How should Florastor Kids be taken?
A: Florastor Kids is a fruit-flavored powder that comes in packets. The powder can be mixed into water, milk, juice or soft foods (such as applesauce), and should be taken twice a day.

Q: How long can Florastor Kids be taken?
A: There is no reason that Florastor Kids can not be taken every day, but it is most often taken once symptoms start, and until symptoms stop. It is recommended to start taking the same day as antibiotic treatment and stopping it once the course of antibiotics is complete. For those wishing to protect themselves from traveler’s diarrhea, it is recommended that Florastor Kids be taken starting four days before the trip starts, and finishing four days after the trip ends.

I've got a box of 20 powder packets (retail $21.95) to giveaway. Please leave a comment if you'd like to be entered into the drawing. I'll draw a name on Wednesday, May 6th.
